Play Experiments With Indian Miniatures With Riyazuddin, Dr. Vijay Siddramappa Hagargundgi & Gargi Chandola

This unique presentation brings together contemporary Miniature artists from the Rajput school of Pahari painting and the Surpur school who explore the theme of play through festivals, games, sensuality and pleasure. The exhibition reimagines Miniatures by breaking codes of traditional iconography, pushing narrative boundaries, and blurring the line between art and design.

In a unique collaboration, this exhibition also featured large-scale projections of rarely seen South Indian miniatures from the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. It will give the audience a contextual connection between traditional and contemporary works. The V&A presentation is one aspect of the custom-designed world that’s been created around the works of each artist in the PLAY show. It is part of KAASH’s continued effort to create immersive experiences around its exhibitions, so there is a multi-sensorial quality that allows viewers to understand and appreciate works more wholesomely.

As part of KAASH’s ongoing efforts to create ‘collectible craft’ works, the team collaborated with artist Riyazuddin to produce a first-of-its kind set of illuminated leather works with miniature paintings. Untreated parchment leather and its natural textures are part of the story of frolicking gods and festivals. The pieces were previewed at the AD Design Show recently and proved to be very popular.

For the first time in many years, Dr. Vijay Siddramappa Hagargundgi, the award-winning expert of the Surpur school of Miniature painting, will showcase a series of works in both colour and contemporary-style line drawings. Dr. Hagargundgi came out of retirement and spent more than a month in residence at KAASH in Bangalore to work on his pieces for the show. His works have been collected by connoisseurs around the country for many years, but he hasn’t presented colour works for a while. PLAY presents a unique opportunity to view and understand the genius of this master artist.
