Thinking Hands With Sunita, Mayur & Tushar Vyeda, Gareeba Singh Tekam & Ram Singh Urveti
What new terrains are explored when traditional art forms encounter new surface materials?
This is the premise of the month-long residency at KAASH, bringing together three indigenous art forms: Warli, Gond and Meena art.
Thinking Hands presents a series of artworks by the Vayeda Brothers setting new horizons for Warli art, Gareeba Singh Tekam and Ram Singh Urveti working with Gond art, and Sunita with Meena art. Working with corten steel, black board and wood in varying scales, the artists carry forward themes of nature intrinsic to their art forms. TheWarli room explores the idea of 'emergence' with a narrative of the natural world growing underwater to the life above ground. The Gond section conveys a theme of duality with day and night and the sun and moon composed within a forest scape. The Meena room takes on a graffiti character creating a dream-like world of
animal and plant life, with layered, interpretive narratives.
Thinking Hands attempts to create an engagement rooted in an instinctive response to inherited knowledge of traditional art practices. The exhibition takes a considered approach to new media, unearthing new facets to established traditions with these artists and beyond.
