Darshanam

This festive show within a show is a result of iteration and collaboration between the KAASH team and the protagonists of the exhibition, Jayshree Poddar, Andra Anastasio and Bhupendra Baghel. Darshanam, or viewing, celebrates the objects and subjects if worship.

The Vedantic concept of Ahangraha Upasana - ‘you are what you worship’ - permeates the work of textile designer and artist, Jayshree Poddar. Her works in the show are sculptural ‘pop-art’ renditions of Devi, combining illumination, terracotta, silk, copper, brass, aluminium, and wood.

Jayshree’s abstract Devis are in the central room. The next room carries a wall of Devi masks swathed in silk. Each mask is internally illuminated to symbolise a diya or offering to Devi. The entire show is punctuated with diyas, old and new.

The contemporary diyas are a result of the jugalbandhi between Andrea and Bhupendra. Inspired by ancient south Indian diyas, Andrea has designed a series of contemporary oil lamps, wrought from the Dhokra casting process of bell metal endemic to Chhattisgarh. The diyas create a meditative experience of ‘viewing.’
