Darshanam

This festive show is a result of iteration and collaboration with textile artist Jayshree Poddar, designer Andrea Anastasio and Dokra artist Bhupendra Baghel. Darshanam, or viewing, celebrates the objects and subjects of worship.

The Vedantic concept of Ahangraha Upasana - ‘you are what you worship’ - permeates the work of Jayshree Poddar. Her works in the show are sculptural ‘pop-art’ renditions of Devi, combining illumination, terracotta, silk, copper, brass, aluminium, and wood. The focus of the show was a wall of Devi masks swathed in silk. Each mask is internally illuminated to symbolise a diya or offering to Devi.

The entire show was punctuated with diyas, old and new. The contemporary diyas are a result of the jugalbandhi between Andrea and Bhupendra. Inspired by ancient south Indian diyas, Andrea has designed a series of contemporary oil lamps, wrought from the Dokra casting process of bell metal endemic to Chhattisgarh.
