Bidri Bottle
Bidri Bottle
British sculptor Stephen Cox steps out as a David Bowie fan with his work that’s simply called Bowie. The work represents the sculptor’s oeuvre but as a piece that’s born out of the Bidri practice, it also stands as a first. The Royal Acedemician uses his masterful skill to create a joyful and elegant work. The billowing silhouette of the sculpture recollects the famous Kansai Yamamoto designed Tokyo Pop striped vinyl bodysuit that David Bowie wore during the Aladdin Sane tour of 1973. Fluid lines fan out across the bodysuit like a mesmerising optical illusion. Looking at the piece it is hard to tell its materiality, and therefore its heft is anyone’s guess. In Cox’s interpretation the suit is interpreted in metal Bidriware; the hypnotic lines are etched in silver against a canvas of black. That signature patina of Bidriware comes from a mixture of zinc oxide and copper oxide.
